Ghost Of Tsushima Passes 6.5 Million Units Sold

1 post in this topic

Ghost of Tsushima has sold an impressive amount of copies, quickly proving to be one of the most valuable IPs under Sony's first-party belt. These new details came out along the announcement of a Ghost of Tsushima movie which is currently being developed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski.

Ghost of Tsushima has been out for less of a year but was one of the most well-regarded games of 2020. Despite launching shortly after another prominent PS4 title, The Last of Us 2, the samurai game still managed to make a notable impression on players and carve out a name for itself in a busy year, even with numerous games being delayed. The game stayed in the minds of players thanks to post-launch support, including a well-received co-op mode. Ghost of Tsushima continued to make a name for itself later in the year when the PlayStation 5 released. Sucker Punch released a beautiful PS5 update for Ghost Of Tsushima, which only enhanced the experience for fans and newcomers alike.

All of this support has pushed Ghost of Tsushima to sell over 6.5 million copies, according to Deadline (via Game Rant). As of 2019, Sucker Punch's last game, InFAMOUS: Second Son, had sold 6 million copies after being on shelves for 6 years. To put it mildly, Ghost of Tsushima is a massive success for the studio, and this could mean that a sequel can't be far off. With a movie being greenlit, it seems likely Sony is going to continue to invest in the franchise in big ways and the growth will only continue.

The success of Ghost of Tsushima goes beyond sales numbers as well. Ghost of Tsushima has a high completion rate, ranking as one of the most completed PS4 games according to PSN trophy stats. More than half of the people who have played the game have completed it, which would suggest that over 3 million people have rolled credits. Of course, this doesn't account for people who rented Ghost of Tsushima, played it through game sharing, or aren't even connected to PSN, so it's likely that the number is much higher.

The success of the game has also caused other developers to take notice. Ubisoft is reportedly taking heavy inspiration from Ghost of Tsushima for the next Assassin's Creed, though nothing has been confirmed yet. If true, this means Sucker Punch could be to thank for finally giving fans the highly-requested Japanese setting for Assassin's Creed. Whether or not Ubisoft can hold a candle to what Sucker Punch did with Ghost of Tsushima remains to be seen.

Ghost of Tsushima is out now on PlayStation 4.
