Bethesda Teases Unannounced Games From New Studios

1 post in this topic

Bethesda teased new unannounced games coming from newly acquired studios during its roundtable discussion with Xbox. Bethesda, famously known for The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series, has officially been brought into the fold of Xbox Game Studios. Today marks the new partnership’s first day since Microsoft received approval to acquire ZeniMax Media, owner of Bethesda Softworks, for $7.5 billion. The deal includes all of Bethesda’s subsidiaries as well, including DOOM Eternal’s id Software and the upcoming Deathloop’s Arkane Studios. The acquisition of Bethesda’s properties brings the total number of first-party studios under Microsoft to 23.

Microsoft and Bethesda have been working together since the days of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, with the former helping to bring the title to consoles. Since then, the two companies have had a close relationship. Over the years, Bethesda has debut new titles alongside Xbox at E3, released exclusive content for Xbox systems, and primarily focused on optimizing games to run best on Xbox. Since the announcement of the acquisition, Microsoft has added many Bethesda developed or published titles to Xbox Game Pass.

During the roundtable discussion on Xbox's YouTube, Erin Losi, VP of global marketing and communications at Bethesda, announced that games are currently developing at two of their newly acquired studios. The first is Roadhouse Studios, which joined Bethesda in 2020; it operates out of Wisconsin. Its second secret project comes from Alpha Dog Games, a mobile game developer in Nova Scotia. No other information about the games is available as of this writing.

With Bethesda under the Xbox umbrella, Microsoft is now poised and ready to redeem itself for its perceived lack of new and original games for its Xbox consoles. However, a new challenge presents itself - reestablishing the need to own a Series X/S console. Owning 23 studios doesn’t necessarily mean that every studio will produce a genre or generation-defining game. Outside of Halo, Gears of War, and Forza, few of its first-party titles are well received.

Whether or not Xbox Game Studios produce a slew of amazing games like Sony or Nintendo is still very much in the air. But fans should have renewed hope that they finally will have exclusive games to play and talk about soon, especially from teams as famed as Bethesda's. Hopefully, Microsoft can deliver on its promise of bringing new experiences to its customers, even if it'll be at the expense of PlayStation and Nintendo players.
